Open-plan Living

A growing modern trend amongst society with regard to their homes is opting for open-plan living. With the reason for this choice varying from one individual to another, it is without doubt a wonderful choice as far as your home decor is concerned.

Open-plan living, for those of you who are not familiar with the concept, refers to undivided living areas. Put simply, the different living areas in your home are not distinctly separated by barriers which result in each area being a totally different room. A simple example of open plan living would be where one room or area of the house accounts for your lounge and dining room and perhaps even the kitchen, without a separation of the two, the one leads on to the other.

Open-plan living can be a rather cost effective measure if you are building your house, open-plan would require fewer walls, doors, paint etc. And if you are using fewer resources, you are saving on building expenses which equates to a saving of money. Open-plan living makes for convenient living, especially when you have kids at home or if you love entertaining. If you have kids at home, it will be relatively easy to get on with preparing dinner in the kitchen, without having to worry about constantly running between rooms to check on the kids, you won’t need to run around, as it is an open plan and so chances are you will be able to keep your eye on both the chicken you are marinading and the kids playing a game on the playstation 3 in the lounge at the same time. If you like entertaining guests, open-plan living simplifies your life immensely, you can continue to socialise with guest who are lounging over a glass of wine while you add those finishing touches to dinner, you can easily move around, without leaving your guests feeling as if the host/hostess has abandoned them.

Another major advantage of open-plan living is space. Yes, open-plan living saves you space and at the same times makes your home seem bigger. Keep in mind that while you are at the dining table – you are not restricted in terms of space surrounding you, as you have your lounge, kitchen and perhaps even patio all in the same open-plan space, thus making the place feel bigger. Open-plan living is also great for special occasions, for example if you are having a party at home, if you have an open plan area, then you simple would have to clear the furniture out for the day and you would have a wonderful, huge, spacious area within your home which can amply accommodate all of your guests, and you won’t have to resort to the inconvenience of pitching a tent on your lawn, or hiring out a hall etc.

Open-plan living make for ease of decor, you need to focus on each room individually, you decide on one theme and let it run across the entire open-plan. Open-plan living is a growing modern trend, however it is not ideal for everyone,  if you are a traditionalist and prefer having each element distinctly separated as individual rooms, then there is nothing wrong with you for not liking the open-plan concept – we are all individuals with individual likes and dislikes.

Open-plan living adds fluidity to your home, extending your living ares, making your home seem bigger and more spacious than it actually is, add a touch of elegance and class with a modern age feel, and makes for easy, comfortable open-plan living.
