Mixing Colours is Not a Crime
Posted by Dalesh Kowlesar on April 1st, 2010Gone are the days when everything simply just had to match, if you duvet was white with pink flowers, then your curtains too had to be white with pink flowers, oh and don’t forget the design had to be identical – anything else would be second grade. Decor and design has taken on a contemporary stance, taking into account tastes and styles of the 21st century – recognising the need for a transition from boring mono-tonal decor toward a more multi-coloured approach.
Fifteen years ago if you suggested to your mum to add orange scatter cushions to her chocolate brown couch, she would have thought you were insane and had absolutely no sense of style. Now however, the suggestion would not even be needed- she probably would have picked the orange cushions by herself.
Do not mis-understand the point which I am making – you cannot combine just any colours together, unless you are very crafty and know very well how to blend them together. buttercup yellow and sky blue are a perfect example of colour which would prove rather difficult to mix together when decorating.
A modern trend is going for a basic white look, crisp, fresh very relaxing. When decorating white is the only colour which will look fabulous on its own. white walls, white tiles, white furniture, white linen, white drapes -beautiful. try doing that with any other colour – and you would be left with a rather sore sight.
Some people are trying to achieve the basic white look – but all they are doing is replacing their linen. This is okay, if the other colours and themes in the room blend in well with the white – if they do not, you are going to have a style disaster on your hands.
The scene above is a perfect example of the white look gone wrong. The painting, lamp shade, curtains, carpet head board and pedestal all conflict being different colours styles and designs.
If you are opting to go for a total white look, do bear in mind that maintenance becomes an issue – because white shows dirt much easier which will require much more regular cleaning on your part.
A more contemporary look is what the youth of today are opting for. Rich, bright, bold colours, all thrown together to form a master piece. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having pillow cases of a different colour from your duvet, and your curtains do not have to be made from a fabric identical to your bedding. For a well put together contemporary look, what you need to do – is decide on a colour palette comprising about four or five colours which will complement each other. Next step is to carefully assign colours from your palette to different elements of the room.
Do not be afraid to be bold and creative when decorating your home, do not fear what others will think or say. You need to do things according to your own likes and dislikes – it is after all your space. If you want pink curtains and an orange duvet – then don’t let anyone stand in your way.

Very cool blog, but you must improve your logo graphics.
I think this blog post was secretly a good beginning to a potential series of articles about this topic. A lot of writers act like they know what they are writing about when it comes to this area and most of the time, very few people actually get it. You seem to really dominate it though, so I think you ought to take it and run. Thanks a lot!
