Animal Prints?
Posted by Dalesh Kowlesar on April 2nd, 2010We South African’s love our animal prints – especially leopard and zebra prints. Question is, are they still fashionable and trendy regarding our home decor or are they disasters waiting to happen? Well, to answer that question, I would have to say neither.Animal prints are still very popular and trendy, you just have to ensure you use them wisely.
If you’re thinking about doing your entire room over in leopard prints, and we are talking about curtains, sheets, pillow cases, cushions, duvets, carpets and even your lamp-shades – then, I just might have to set the interior decor police on your case. But if you are talking about leopard print scatter cushions against a creme couch, or an armchair with zebra print fabric over the cushion, or a leopard print throw on a white duvet , then you have got your sense of decor in order.
Animal prints right now have sadly been done to death, just as we did with floral designs, the couches were floral, the curtains were floral, even our aprons were floral. But floral is not out of fashion – it’s just the manner in which it is fashionable has changed. You wouldn’t want a floral couch anymore, but once again – floral scatter cushions against a plain couch work beautifully together.
If you have got a holiday home up in the veld which you sometimes let out as a guest house, you might be thinking along the lines of, they are tourists, they want the feel of the bush, lets make sure everything is covered with animal prints and designs – BAD IDEA! You are going to have your guest house looking like a low class motel.
Like a keep emphasizing – animal prints are still trendy, but you need to use it with caution – not too much, it should not be the focal theme, but should rather compliment a more neutral theme. The point I am trying to get across to you, is that I know some of you simple love these specific animals, which is why you want to theme your room in accordance – but try to keep it simple and elegant. Sometimes, as shown below – you can have a completely neutral theme and have a zebra canvas hung on your wall or a zebra rug across the floor – it looks crisp and elegant.
